The nature reserve that is proposed to be set up in Francistown has finally got its name – “Tachila Nature Reserve”. The name was decided after a voting process, choosing from the names received for the contest. There were a huge number of entries for the naming contest that was announced, and the lucky winner who won a “trip for two to Planet Baobab Safari Camp” was declared as Jocasta Bobeng.
After receiving an overwhelming response of 70 names, the name “Tachila Nature Reserve” was finally chosen meaning “rejoice for what is a saviour for all”. The name now chosen and an identity established steps are underway to start with the other formalities which would ensure turning this dream project into reality. The first step would involve registering a deed of trust so that the lease agreement with the Tati company can be worked out. The proposed 8000 hectares would require a 40 km long and strong wall to contain the different species of animals like rhinos and the new species that is proposed to be introduced here. Efforts are underway to start work at the earliest and the Tati company has already established a project office in the Nswazwi Mall. The area is already inhabited by animals like leopard, hyena, warthog, Mongoose and exotic species of birds like Fish eagle, giant kingfisher, painted snipe and many others. There are plans to introduce a number of new species in the region.The nature reserve would provide a big boost to tourism in the region and would provide the perfect setting for the students of environmental studies to observe and learn about nature, real close.
