Dubai is spending billions of dollars in, tourist attractions and has bought QE2 cruise ship from Cunard Line for $100 million. The Queen Elizabeth 2 will continue her planned cruising itinerary until November 2008. It is being permanently moored off the Palm resort development on the coast of Dubai.
The Dubai Government owned company plans to replicate the original interior decor and fittings as well as including a museum charting the history of the ship. The Palm Jumeirah is the smallest of the three Palm Islands, which claim to be “the eighth wonder of the world” and will accommodate over 2 million people.
Cunard president and managing director Carol Marlow said:
We are delighted that, when her legendary career as an ocean liner ends, there will continue to be a permanent home for her that will enable future generations to continue to experience fully both the ship and her history.
QE2 was built at the John Brown Shipyard on the Clyde in Scotland; it came into service in 1969 and is the longest-serving ship in Cunard’s 168-year history. She was considered the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners prior to the construction of the QM2
Dubai World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said:
QE2 is without a doubt one of the wonders of the maritime world, and is easily the most famous serving liner in the world today.
Dubai is a maritime nation and we understand the rich heritage of QE2. She is coming to a home where she will be cherished
