Experience the grandeur of Stewart Island

If you are not bothered by a cramped-up air taxi and a pretty rugged ferry service, you are fit enough to visit the Stewart Island. Although Stewart Island sees only 8.5 hours of sunlight per day, folks still inhabit the island. This sub-antarctic island is actually the third island of New Zealand.
Well, why would anyone want to live in the the Island town of Oban? Good question. Here’s why. The 380 brave souls who dwell on this island are here for witnessing nature at it’s very best and experiencing the raw power for days on end. This island is a bird watcher’s paradise. The Kiwi birds flock to this island making it a great birdwatchers spot.
The southern lights known as Aurora Australis, sister of the Northern lights are often seen from the Stewart Island. The views are simply spectacular or rather, fabulous. If you are into kayaking, the island offers that as well. You can explore the coastline in a kayak. I think these are good enough reasons for the locals to stick around on this island. Also, the island is home to the Rakiura National Park of New Zealand.
How do you get to Stewart Island? Bluff airport is the major connecting airport. Tourism New Zealand operates the air taxis. There are guided bus tours, flights and even sea kayaking tours. So, if you are game for kiwi birds, ferrets, weasels, stoats and ‘chest thumping’ New Zealanders, you are tough enough to experience Stewart Island.
